6 Crochet Projects for Beginners

Are you new to crochet and eager to start your crafting journey? You’re in the right place! I’ve compiled a list of beginner-friendly crochet projects that are fun, easy, and perfect for your first crochet project.

What Crochet Stitches Should Beginners Learn First?

Before diving into these crochet ideas, it’s a good idea to practise a few basic stitches. These include:

  • Slip knot

  • Single crochet (SC)

  • Half double crochet (HDC)

  • Double crochet (DC)

  • The magic ring

There are plenty of free crochet tutorials on YouTube that make it easy to learn these stitches. Once you’re comfortable, you’re ready to start creating!

1. First up, the skinny scarf! Making a scarf feels like a rite of passage when you’re learning to crochet (or knit, for that matter). It’s so simple - just the same stitch over and over. And since this one’s skinny, it won’t take forever, which is great while you’re getting the hang of holding your yarn and practising those stitches. You can keep it basic, but this pattern has a bit more texture, so your scarf looks extra stylish without being any harder to make.

2. Next, the bucket hat! This is made up of solely single crochet stitches. I love making this hat because you can make it in about an hour and you have the perfect bucket hat for spring and summer. Make sure you use a chunky stiff yarn like the one mentioned in the tutorial!

3. Similar to the bucket hat, is the mini bag! Again super quick and simple to make. The tutorial is so fun cause it uses two different colours together making a really cool look. Maybe you could even match your bag to the bucket hat!

4. I love a scrunchie. This tutorial is great cause the stripes are so fun. You could make these for yourself and your friends to match, how cute!

5. This bandana is super fun! Again another great spring/summer accessory! This project looks complicated but is super easy and I just love the scalloped edge.

6. And finally, crochet gloves! These always get so much attention when I wear them out. They’re a bit more of a step up from the other projects and might take a little longer, but they’re still totally beginner-friendly. Plus, you’ll learn how to make a granny square - a crochet classic that’s super versatile and can be used for all sorts of projects!

These projects are not only beginner-friendly but also on trend and practical. By starting with these ideas, you’ll build confidence, practise essential stitches, and end up with gorgeous handmade pieces to show off!
